Holistic DentistryHolistic Dentistry simply means a dentist that takes every care not to introduce harmful toxins into the body as a result of their dental work. Holistic does not mean some radical departure from conventional dental treatments. In fact the vast majority of good dentists no longer use mercury silver/amalgam filings, it can be argued that most dentists are in some fashion now "Holistic." Why Holistic Dentistry? As the skills and treatments of Dentists began to develop into a profession in the 19th Century, Dentists naturally began to specialise and develop expertise in all dental matters. This specialisation has brought about great results. We now have 3D scanners and computer graphics, vastly improved pain management, skillful implant surgery that can reconstuct a whole mouth, and even machines that will take computer generated image and constuct an instant crown using lasers. Dentistry has become very mechanical and process oriented and much more technical. Along with the obvious benefits of specialization comes an unwelcome side affect. The mouth has become the sole domain of the dentist, and is often viewed and treated in isolation from the rest of the body. While this has brought undoubted benefits, the perils of over specialization are obvious. It's not a problem unique to dentistry. If you have a plumber round to your house to fix your heating, they may not notice or even care, that the roof is about to collapse on your home. Holistic practitioners review the whole person, and in particular the effects of oral health on the whole body. This specifically includes looking at the toxicity of dental materials, but also looks at the well know link between periodontal disease and the heart, dietary and lifestyle choices, and preventative dental health. Is this going to cost me more? You've probably worked out by now that many of the treatments are not going to be available to you on the NHS. So yes, is the short answer to this. However, by ignoring the profound afffect dental health has on your overall health, you will undoubtedly suffer from either large dental bills down the road, or poorer overall health. All our treatments are fully compatible with USA and UK dental standards and we use worldwide standards for our dental materials, so should you have follow-on treatment elsewhere your dentist will be fully familiar with your materials.
